brainstorming, initial design, discussion
You have visited a museum and taken notes (I hope). Those notes will be used to respond to this week’s discussion question(s) and will be POSTED on our Canvas Discussion Board.
BEFORE YOU POST, THOUGH
The other part of this week's Discussion/Assignment, is actually going to be typed out in MLA format, and it will include the following:
a description of what the general topic of your museum will be (and why)
a list of some of the exhibits we will find in your museum and how they will be arranged (for example, will your museum of early arcade games have a room with old penny mechanical devices from before the 20th century? will there be a room devoted to early pinball? will you end with the very first tabletop electronic games, such as Pong, in tabletop bar form?)
HERE IS A GOOD SPOT FOR AN IMPORTANT REMINDER: collections must be uncommon (now) and unusual (now). A museum of newer gaming consoles or a museum of smart phones WILL NOT WORK; everyone has these or has seen these; such a museum is pointless (they are just GameStop and The Verizon Store).
thinking about one exhibit, one room, even one item in your museum with a particularly intereesting history, describe what your Special Exhibit will be (remember, this will be the subject of your research paper, so make sure it is something that has some solid source information; one of those sources must be a book)
include a floor plan (which can be a rough sketch at this point)
NOTE: there are two samples here for you to look at so that you are sure you are doing this correctly (they samples are also in the Files section of Canvas):
Step 2 typed assignment on Barbie's Image Museum Step 2 typed assignment on Failed Inventions Museum
Save your Word document to a hard drive or a thumb drive so that you will be able to upload and attach it to this week's Discussion; that is a very important part of this week's discussion.
ok, now you can go and check out this week's discussion topic
The part you are going to write as your Post on the Discussion board is very easy, based on the notes you took on one or more of the (virtual) museum visits.
Be sure you attach the written part of this week's assignment at the end of your Post because THAT is what the class is going to look at and respond to (your museum design).
It is all explained in the Discussion topic, and, yes, this week there is extra credit involved :)
Both the write-up you did here and the comments you get from the class will help you with Step 3 of this project, which is due next week.
