Out of the Dust is not written like a history textbook and does not give the reader a comprehensive view of the Dust Bowl era in the U.S.
Is this a valid way of teaching history? What elements are historical? Do they give a fair (if not complete) overview of the time and place? What do the fictional elements add or subtract from the work? Be sure to quote and document some passages to illustrate your points.
It would be illuminating if you included some of your own memories about learning history in elementary and middle schools. Did you like it? How was it taught? Do you remember what you learned? How were you tested? You might also include information about other children you know who may or may not have actually been inspired by history classes in school.
